Registered Election Official Certification Program
Election Center’s Registered Election Official (REO) certification program teaches broad election and voter registration administration topics, along with specific state election requirements and procedures. Unlike the CERA certification, this is a joint effort between the center and individual states. The three-hour courses are taught by election administrators with years of experience from across the country.
The Registered Election Official (REO) training program is offered at the state level by either the state association or chief election authority and is an affordable option for local election administrators and their staff. Election Center creates the curriculum, identifies instructors, and provides registration and certification support.
States currently participating in the REO program include:
California,
Idaho,
Texas.
Advantages of State Certification
The benefit of state certification programs is that they can focus directly on legal specifics and task-specific duties. They aim to ensure compliance with the laws and uniform application of state procedures to ensure equal voter protection. State certification also assures competency in administering the process within a state’s rules, regulations, and laws.
Students who successfully graduate from the state certification program obtain the following benefits:
- Designation of (State) Registered Election Official
- May substitute REO Certification for one CERA certification core course.
- May attend annual renewal courses.
